Stanisław Ulam
Born in Lviv in 1909 (which is a city in Ukraine, which at the time was part of Poland) was a brilliant Polish mathematician and one of the most notable Polish scientist. Just before the outbreak of the Second World War, he went to the USA to join the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He took part in the Manhattan project and later on, working with von Neumann, he was one of the pioneers of the Monte Carlo method (I provided a frequency-resolved counterpart of this method on my thesis).
The Ulam programme
In his honor, the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) supports foreign (non Polish) researchers to develop their careers by intensifying international mobility and to allow them to establish scientific cooperation with excellent host institutions in Poland.
